VisualEditor: Page options icon is confusing
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

From John Broughton:

It would be easier to remember what this menu does, and to tell others about it (say, in the User Guide) if the icon for it were the text “Page” (with a down-arrow) rather than three horizontal lines. This menu icon approach is used for the “Insert” and “Cite” menus, which helps users immediately understand (and/or remember) what type of items are on the menu.

Page options is a vague thing and so gets a vague icon . We could use the typical or but that might get confused as settings for the editor itself. The same might be true for too, plus we're using both those icons for items within the menu.

Other options might be , or .

@Whatamidoing-WMF, the icon while confusing has become quite popular as a more options icon, do you still find it difficult while communicating to users?

With T177432: Unify and refine WikimediaUI icon set progressing this should get resolved as we're using an article icon with settings cog.

Prateek, I don't remember seeing any complaints about this for a long while. Maybe people are used to it now?
