Ability to set a category to display linked page by {{SUBPAGENAME}} or last title segment rather than {{PAGENAME}}
Open, LowPublicFeature

Description

The Wikisources utilise "work/subpage" nomenclature for the display of many works. When working with biographical dictionaries, encyclopaedias, poetry, lectures, etc. where the subpage components can be considered specific works in their own right there is a significant issue in the category display of works.

For instance in the work "The Dictionary of Australasian Biography" the subpages would display in a category in the form of {{PAGENAME}}, eg.

The Dictionary of Australasian Biography/Parker, Sir Henry Watson
The Dictionary of Australasian Biography/Parker, Stephen Henry
The Dictionary of Australasian Biography/Parkes, Edmund Samuel
The Dictionary of Australasian Biography/Parkes, Hon. Sir Henry

where what is required is that they display in the form {{SUBPAGENAME}}, eg.

Parker, Sir Henry Watson
Parker, Stephen Henry
Parkes, Edmund Samuel
Parkes, Hon. Sir Henry

without the {{BASEPAGENAME}}

What would be useful is the means to set a specific marker in a category that makes the display of that category to utilise {{SUBPAGENAME}}

The sole ability to categorise based only on {{PAGENAME}} significantly effects the usefulness of categorisation of these compendium works. Imagine the 1911 Encyclopaedia articles on plants that all start with the name of the work and your eyes need to search down the title to find the relevant component of the article itself. Horrid.

Thanks for any suggestions and means to resolve this matter.

@Qgil It would great if this sort of issue could get some attention at a hackathon. My non-hacking brain doesn't see that it should be that complex an issue, and it would be truly helpful for the Wikisources to have this available, and in fact any place where subpages are used, and often are the real content of a work that needs highlighting.

I did mention to @Bawolff a while back however he was unable to provide time for the task.

@Billinghurst, if you are attending the #Wikimania-Hackathon-2015 then you can add the tag and work to get developer attention before and during the event.

I'm adding this task to Possible-Tech-Projects just in case, to increase its chances of being evaluated.

This is a message posted to all tasks under "Backlog" at Possible-Tech-Projects. Outreachy-Round-11 is around the corner. If you want to propose this task as a featured project idea, we need a clear plan with community support, and two mentors willing to support it.

This is a message sent to all Possible-Tech-Projects. The new round of Wikimedia Individual Engagement Grants is open until 29 Sep. For the first time, technical projects are within scope, thanks to the feedback received at Wikimania 2015, before, and after (T105414). If someone is interested in obtaining funds to push this task, this might be a good way.

I don't really see this as a Mentor project - It has insufficient work for an intern
@Qgil Should this be in Possible-Tech-Projects ?

Billinghurst, I can be a tech mentor for this task, but I agree it is to small for a GSOC/Outreachy type task. Maybe we can bundle a few similar Wikisource related tasks into a project which would be suitable for GSOC/Outreachy.

I saw it as something that could be addressed at a hackathon, hence why I piped up around that time.

The Wikisources have plenty of work that would enjoy the hands of a volunteer who would like to work with our community. Be it in on a series of similarl, smaller tasks bundled; or someone looking for a more significant set of work. Our somewhat more resident developer struggles to keep up with our needs in Proofread Page.

There is also an indexing task related to a similar component T71658

@Qgil Should this be in Possible-Tech-Projects ?

No it should not - scope is too small.

Billinghurst renamed this task from Ability to set a category to display linked page by {{SUBPAGENAME}} rather than {{PAGENAME}} to Ability to set a category to display linked page by {{SUBPAGENAME}} or last title segment rather than {{PAGENAME}}.Nov 8 2016, 3:24 PM
