Language selection for labels = any valid code as per the IANA language subtag registry
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

When entering labels in WikiData, any language of the world should be allowed, not only the current selection of about 250. There is no reason any more for that limitation.

Language/script/variety marking for internet ressources is currently defined in the IANA language subtag registry.

Thus the above suggestion boils down to mark each language selection for labels by a valid code as per the IANA language subtag registry, and allow any of these tags to be used (i.e. referred to) by editors when entering labels.

I am uncertain to which WikiData component this belongs. Feel free to assign it to one.

This is up to the language committee and Gerard explained their current standpoint on the mailing list. From the dev side there is nothing to do.
