PDF Book Creator not working on gu.wikisource/de.wikipedia: "Waiting for job runner to pick up render job"
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

on Gujarati (gu) wikisource, book creator is not working. When clicking on Download as PDF, it hangs at Progress: 0.00% and status remains "Status: Waiting for job runner to pick up render job". for example see https://gu.wikisource.org/w/index.php?title=%E0%AA%B5%E0%AA%BF%E0%AA%B6%E0%AB%87%E0%AA%B7:%E0%AA%AA%E0%AB%81%E0%AA%B8%E0%AB%8D%E0%AA%A4%E0%AA%95&bookcmd=rendering&return_to=%E0%AA%B8%E0%AA%AD%E0%AB%8D%E0%AA%AF%3ADsvyas%2F%E0%AA%AA%E0%AB%81%E0%AA%B8%E0%AB%8D%E0%AA%A4%E0%AA%95%E0%AB%8B%2F%E0%AA%B8%E0%AA%B0%E0%AB%8D%E0%AA%B5%E0%AB%8B%E0%AA%A6%E0%AA%AF&collection_id=358bf84a7ca7b3c4d59abf926bb587818992dcd3&writer=rl

Similarly it doesn't allow user to save book in Wikisource:Books/ namespace as subpage. For the books already created and saved in User's own Books subpage, none of the download options are working. Please let me know if I need to file bugs for each download type, e.f. PDF, ODT, ZIM, etc. as none of them works.

Have tried it in IE 11.0.9; Firefox 33.0 and Torch 33.0, its not working on any of these. OS: Windows 7

Even refreshing the page does not help, so looks different than bug 71574.

Yes, I'm on vacation this week (but checking in via email). Can this be reproduced, or was it a transient failure? Getting timestamps from the reports would also be useful, so we can see if the problems are correlated.

According to godog on engineering@, restarting the service (like last week) restarted the queue processing and PDF rendering should work again. Cscott is looking deeper into the underlying reasons.

Is bug 72002 a duplicate? "Rendering process died with non zero code: 1"

The root cause was CPU time exhaustion caused by hanging jobs. It was fixed by restarting the service and by https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/167870.
